A few seats are still available for the three operas showcased in the Garsington Opera’s 20th anniversary season (3 June- 5 July).
Fidelio - from 3 June
Love, faithfulness and courage are perennial operatic themes but Fidelio goes further, using music to express political ideals - in this case, the struggle for liberty.
Beethoven’s only opera offers thrilling music for the chorus, including the celebrated prisoners’ chorus and inspiring dramatic roles for the soloists.
Young rising star, Rebecca von Lipinski sings the lead role and is joined by an outstanding cast including the renowned Russian baritone Sergei Leiferkus.
La Cenerentola - from 6 June
Rossini’s La Cenerentola sees two of the cast making their UK debut - Turkish Ezgi Kutlu and Greek Antonis Koroneos.
Based on Perrault’s famous fairytale, Cinderella, the libretto by Jacopo Ferretti removes the story from its fairytale roots, adding a touch of realism and depth.
The libretto combines comedy with pathos, and lively social satire with romance, leading to a dazzling complexity that is played out in Rossini’s 1817 score, which was written in less than a month.
Mirandolina - from 18 June
The final production is the UK premiere of Mirandolina by Czech composer Martin?.
Best described as a thoroughly entertaining operatic romp, this comedy is based on Goldoni’s play The Innkeeper, and features the beautiful Colombian singer Juanita Lascarro in the title role.
The operas are performed on the terrace adjoining the Manor, which is at Stadhampton near Oxford.
The enclosed purpose-built auditorium at Garsington Opera has exceptional natural acoustics with good sight lines and there is a long interval when you can picnic in the gardens or have dinner in the restaurant.
Tickets from £80 at the Box Office
