A 1920s Russian comedy Dying for It runs from 10-13 June at the Bull Theatre, Barnet.
Banned for being ‘subversive’ in Stalin’s Russia, this new production is by Andy Mills for Katalyst.
It is an adaptation of Nikolai Erdman’s The Suicide and Kathryn Rogers is artistic director.
The action centres on Semyon, the archetypal ‘little man.’
Unemployed, he lives in a hallway with his wife, Masha and his mother-in-law in the next room.
When his last hope of earning a crust and some self-respect disappears he decides to take his own life.
When word gets out about his intention, he finds himself inundated with visitors begging him to die on their behalf.
The ‘fake’ death squad includes a discontented intellectual, a romantic sexpot, a drunken priest and a communist postman.
On the night of Semyon’s suicide party, events spiral to a gloriously farcical climax.
Dying for It features a number of faces well known to OVO audiences, including Lisa White, Debbie Oakes, Andy Mills, Kathryn Rogers, Ben Bradshaw, Trevor D Oakes and Adam Bottomley.
