A new ‘take’ on Much Ado About Nothing by the OVO Theatre ensemble comes complete with live music; it will be performed as part of the 2009 St Albans Festival on 25-26 June.
OVO has an excellent reputation for its original interpretations of Shakespeare’s plays and its ninth Shakespeare play promises to be no exception.
This production by OVO made its debut in Great Munden and will be staged for just two days at The Maltings Arts Theatre, St Albans, starting on Thursday 25th June.
Set in peace-time Britain, 1945, with the boys back from war and the girls shedding their overalls for evening frocks, it’s a time for singing, dancing and falling in love.
Welcoming Britain’s brave boys back home are local dance band, Georgie Seacole and his Merry Notes alongside the sensational Bramante Sisters, the Squire, the Home Guard and the ARP Wardens.
The central story contrasts fools rushing into marriage with bantering ‘singletons’ and sparkles with humour; especially the witty dialogue between Beatrice and Benedick.
Anna Franklin takes the part of Beatrice with Edmund White as Benedick. According to the Hertford Mercury, “both bring real humanity to their roles.”
Their reviewer refers to Howard Branch (Claudio) and Faith Turner (Hero) as “memorable lovers.” Richard Cowling is the “baddie,” Don John and Dewi Williams plays the scruffy governor of Messina.
OVO’s presentation of Much Ado About Nothing plays at The Maltings Arts
Theatre, St Albans, at 8pm on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th June 2009.
Tickets £12 (£10 concessions)
